Bangladesh is imposing a 28 percent tax on rice imports to support its farmers after local production revived, Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith said on Thursday.

By government accounts, four foreign-backed cellphone operators owe $500 million to Bangladesh in unpaid taxes. By the companies’ accounts, the figure is closer to $50 million if it isn’t zero.

The government has raised the travel tax in the upcoming fiscal year, a move that is set to put pressure on the financially-challenged migrant workers, who form the majority of outbound travellers from Bangladesh.

The chairmen of parliamentary standing committees on government ministries favour a wider casting of the tax net to increase direct tax revenue in the upcoming national budget.

ISLAMABAD: In connivance with tax officials, bogus companies owned by influential fraudsters have received more than Rs9 billion in sales tax refunds against bogus documents in the current fiscal year.
