The French Polynesian president, Oscar Temaru, has confirmed that his government will introduce an income tax.

The Swiss government has summoned the French ambassador to express its displeasure at French president Nicolas Sarkozy’s description of Switzerland as a tax haven.

THE FRENCH state agency charged with attracting foreign investment has said ambitious tax-cutting policies have made France’s corporate tax regime “just as competitive” as countries such as Ireland, citing a study which puts France’s effective rate at just 8.2 per cent.

Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services downgraded its ratings on French Polynesia to the brink of junk territory, saying its liquidity has deteriorated because of recessionary conditions and political instability.
