As pay notices for the Single Property Tax (ENFIA) reached 6.3 million property owners last week, the mixture of good and bad shocks that they evinced in taxpayers was a clear indication of the confusion regarding how the new property rates have been calculated by the government.

Greece has the fiscal room for tax relief measures after concluding its final bailout programme, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said on Monday.

While the process for the submission of income tax declarations was completed on Monday and Tuesday is the deadline for the first installment, all signs point to revenues being about half a billion euros less than last year.

Greece is scheduled to exit its marathon bailout this summer after hitting the tough fiscal targets set by its creditors. But the country has done so by raising taxes so high that they are strangling the small businesses that form the backbone of its economy.
