The town will explore establishing a new property tax – one that will pay for the town’s EMS services.

The Commission decided today to send letters of formal notice to Cyprus, Greece and Malta for not levying the correct amount of Value-Added Tax (VAT) on the provision of yachts.

The Maltese finance minister rejected accusations that his country was a tax haven on Thursday (12 January), saying it had “nothing to hide”.

Malta has been accused of being a tax haven, just as it takes the helm of the European Union in a critical year for the bloc’s crackdown on tax avoidance.

We have had continuous economic growth in Malta for many years now. GDP has risen from €6.9 billion in 2011 to €8.8bn in 2015, an impressive €1.9bn or 27.5 per cent. The country is passing through a cycle of prosperity, so why talk about lowering taxes?
