Fuel taxes being introduced by a Labour-led Government and Auckland’s Labour mayor Phil Goff are taking food off the table for the poor, says a social agency. Auckland Action Against Poverty (AAAP) said fuel taxes by their nature are hitting low-income families the hardest.

Kenya’s parliament on Thursday backed the halving of a new value added tax on oil products, bowing to complaints by Kenyans squeezed by high prices, but the move drew protests from some lawmakers who want the levy scrapped altogether.

Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday defied parliament by rejecting a finance bill that sought to postpone a widely unpopular tax on fuel that has triggered strikes and public anger.

Auckland’s Regional Fuel Tax has generated $13.2 million in its first month of operation – about $700,000 more than initial estimates. The fuel tax came into effect on July 1, when petrol stations across the super-city put prices up by 11.5c per litre.

In its first month of operation, the Regional Fuel Tax (RFT) has generated $13.2 million (excluding GST), with the first projects made possible by this revenue already announced.
